New Forest Community Rail Partnership: An Opportunity for Friends of Sway Station

The railway has always played a vital role in the development of the New Forest, connecting communities, supporting local businesses and enabling visitors to explore one of Britain’s most distinctive landscapes. Today, the New Forest Community Rail Partnership (NFCRP) continues that tradition by bringing together local communities, transport operators, councils, businesses and volunteers to ensure that the railway remains a valuable asset for residents and visitors alike.

What is the New Forest Community Rail Partnership?

The New Forest Community Rail Partnership is a Department for Transport accredited Community Rail Partnership operating as a not-for-profit Community Interest Company. Its purpose is to connect people with places, opportunities and each other through the railway and wider public transport network. Working alongside station adoption groups, community organisations, local authorities and transport providers, the partnership supports projects that encourage sustainable travel, improve station environments, celebrate local heritage and strengthen local communities.

Community Rail Partnerships have become an important part of the railway industry across Britain. They focus not only on increasing rail use but also on promoting social inclusion, supporting local economies, encouraging environmentally sustainable travel and helping stations become welcoming community spaces. South Western Railway, which serves Sway Station, actively supports Community Rail Partnerships across its network and recognises their role in connecting railways more closely with the communities they serve.

Why Community Rail Matters

The NFCRP works on a wide range of initiatives. These include:

  • Promoting sustainable and integrated transport.
  • Supporting education and community engagement projects.
  • Improving station environments through volunteering and station adoption.
  • Celebrating local history, culture and heritage.
  • Encouraging tourism and access to local attractions.
  • Helping people gain confidence in using public transport

By creating partnerships between the railway and local communities, these projects generate wider social, economic and environmental benefits beyond simply moving passengers from one place to another.

Opportunities for Sway

As one of the most active communities within the New Forest, Sway is well placed to benefit from closer collaboration with the NFCRP.

Friends of Sway Station could work with the Partnership on a variety of projects, including:

Heritage Interpretation

Sway has a rich history, from the remarkable Sway Tower and local Arts and Crafts heritage to its railway development in the nineteenth century. Joint heritage displays at the station could help residents and visitors discover more about the village’s fascinating past while waiting for trains.

Station Improvements

Community Rail Partnerships regularly support planting schemes, artwork, interpretation panels and station enhancement projects. These can make stations more attractive, welcoming and reflective of their local communities.

Walking and Cycling Trails

Sway Station is a gateway to the New Forest. The production of walking maps, heritage trails and cycling guides focused on Sway could encourage visitors to arrive by train and explore the area sustainably, helping local businesses while reducing car dependency.

Schools and Young People

The NFCRP supports educational initiatives that help young people understand railway safety, sustainable transport and local heritage. Working with local schools could create opportunities for art projects, history exhibitions and educational visits connected to both the railway and the village.

Tourism and Community Events

Sway hosts a range of community activities throughout the year. Collaboration with the NFCRP could help promote these events to rail passengers throughout the region, encouraging visitors to travel sustainably while boosting participation and local spending.

Looking Forward

The objectives of the Friends of Sway Station and the New Forest Community Rail Partnership are naturally aligned. Both seek to make railway stations welcoming, promote sustainable travel and strengthen connections between the railway and the communities it serves. By working together, there is an opportunity to enhance Sway Station as both a transport hub and a community gateway, showcasing the village’s heritage, supporting local businesses and encouraging greater use of the railway.

As Community Rail continues to grow across the country, Sway has the potential to become a model of how a local station can act as a focal point for community pride, heritage interpretation and sustainable tourism. The New Forest Community Rail Partnership offers an ideal partner in helping to realise that vision.
